Updates from the November CCAK Competition Committee Meeting

Please visit the Team Alaska Selection Criteria document for changes to the JN Team Alaska selection process. The updates are summarized in the Team Naming Ceremony section:

  • Junior Nationals Team Alaska is comprised of 50 athletes.

  • Arctic Winter Games Team Alaska is comprised of 24 athletes.

    • 4 males and 4 females per age group (U14, U16, U18)

 

Team Naming Ceremony

At the Team Naming Ceremony after the final Besh Cup race, athletes may choose a position on the Arctic Winter Games team, the Junior Nationals team, or neither team. When one team is filled, the remaining eligible skiers may accept or decline a position on the openings of the remaining team. In the interest of time and consideration of other athletes’ preparation, your decision is to be given at the Team Naming Ceremony. If you are a contender for one of the teams and are unable to attend the Team Naming Ceremony, you must notify the CCAK Administrator by February 1, 2024 what your team choice would be if offered the opportunity.

U18/U20 Team - Junior Nationals

Seventeen (17) positions per gender are allocated to the Junior Nationals Team Alaska combined U18/U20 division.

  • All U18, regardless of birth year are eligible to make Team Alaska.

  • First year U20 skiers must rank in the top 14 overall of the U18/U20 Team Alaska points list.

  • Second year U20 skiers must rank in the top 10 overall of the U18/U20 Team Alaska Points list.

 

U16 Team - Junior Nationals

Eight (8) positions per gender are allocated to the Junior Nationals Team Alaska U16 division.

  • On an Arctic Winter Games year (even years), U16 athletes must be ranked among the top 14 on the final Team Alaska points list.

  • On a non-Arctic Winter Games year, U16 athletes must be ranked among the top 12 on the final Team Alaska points list.

 

U14, U16, U18 - Arctic Winter Games

Arctic Winter Games positions are open to eligible athletes on the Team Alaska points list.

Other Routes to Team Alaska Junior Nationals

Athletes who attend US Senior Nationals in January and finish in the top 30 of the final World Junior Championships (WJC) list will be highlighted on the Team Alaska points list as qualifying for Team Alaska.

  • The criteria set by US Ski & Snowboard states that athletes who are ranked between 1 and 20 on the final WJC do not count toward the team size quota (prequalifiers). The team size is expanded by the athletes who prequalify.

  • The criteria set by Cross Country Alaska criteria states that skiers who are ranked between 21 and 30 on the final WJC do count toward the team size quota. (autoqualifiers).

  • The criteria set by US Ski & Snowboard states skiers who are named and attend the U18 Nations’ Cup or the World Junior teams are prequalifiers.

  • The criteria set by US Ski & Snowboard states that biathlon or Nordic combined skiers who are named and attend the World Junior teams are prequalifiers for Junior Nationals


 

Earlybird Race Discount Deadline

  • The deadline for U16 & older who register for all six races to get one free race is November 30, 2023.

 

Besh Cup Series T-shirt

  • All skiers who register for all six races receive a Besh Cup series T-shirt designed by Becca Rorabaugh.

  • All U12 and younger skiers who register for any number of races receive a Besh Cup series T-shirt designed by Becca Rorabaugh.

 

Winterstart SuperTour / Besh Cup 1 & 2

There are two mid-week SuperTour races hosted by Nordic Skiing Association of Anchorage (NSAA). Visit the NSAA website Tuesday & Wednesday event details. These are races for U18 and older. U16 skiers may want to inquire about participating and should check with their coaches for advisement.

Besh Cup Races 1 & 2 are part of the Winterstart SuperTour and for the most part will run as usual, for those familiar with Besh Cup racing. Race details for Besh 1 & 2 will be posted in early December. Registration for Besh 1 & 2 closes at midnight on WEDNESDAY, December 13, 2023.
