Cross Country Alaska
Covid-19 and the 2020-21 ConocoPhillips Besh Cup Race Season
January 6, 2021
The Cross Country Alaska Board of Directors has elected to cancel the statewide ConocoPhillips Besh Cup races 3 & 4 as CCAK events. As was done with Besh Cup races 1 & 2, the Mat-Su Ski Club (MSSC), the club originally scheduled to host the races, will host a weekend of races on January 16 & 17, 2021, at their venue. The distances and formats will remain interval start classic (Saturday) and interval start freestyle (Sunday).
These National Ranking List events will be sanctioned by US Ski & Snowboard & International Skiing Federation (FIS). The races will not have CCAK Junior National or Besh Cup points associated with them and there will not be prize money offered.
With the removal of JN points and Besh Cup, CCAK hopes to decrease the need to travel. CCAK strongly encourages skiers from outside of southcentral Alaska to consider U.S. Center for Disease Control guidance to limit travel. U16 and younger skiers from outside southcentral are advised not to participate in the races. For those who choose to travel, please be sure that travel is carefully planned to avoid mixing with the local community.
All athletes who have registered for Besh Cups 3 and 4 will be automatically registered for the MSSC races. Any persons wanting to still register for the January 16 & 17, 2021 races, please do so on the CCAK website. Registration will continue online; with registration closing at midnight on January 13. All race details including start lists and race protocol will be posted on the Events & Races tab of the MSSC website. Please allow time for MSSC to update the website, so check for details after January 8, 2021.
We appreciate the understanding and support of the Alaska ski community during these difficult times. CCAK thanks MSSC for providing a racing opportunity for many of those who have been training for the originally scheduled races.
The CCAK Board of Directors will next work with Nordic Ski Club of Fairbanks regarding Besh Cup races 5 & 6. That decision will be announced by January 15.
