Softer than yesterday as temps were warmer overnight - and breezy, and the gap at the junction likely requires walking a few yards depnding on how much you cherish your skis. Beware of shallow areas they are getting punchy. But very good up valley still!

Rabbit Creek Valley - 7:00 AM, Sun May 11, 2008
Bomber crust up to Rabbit Lake and beyond (down towards McHugh) even though temp reporting said the air temp didn't get below 35 . . . Dropping into the Rabbit Creek drainage makes a great approach route since it's laterally level! Super smooth conditions and doable even with a substantial head wind.

Tons of snow for backcountry skiing behind the Nike Site. Nice corn conditions in sunny side of gullies. Beautiful conditions in afternoon after things have softened up. Watch out for the foul schnee on lower slopes--it doesn't matter if you're going fast or not--it'll suck you in!

Hatcher Pass - 11:00 AM, Sat May 10, 2008
Gold Mint- slush, good for dogs and boots.
Archangel-slush and dirt, done for the year.
Independence Mine-awesome-nice crust early. Still full snow coverage to the lower parking lot. Recommend heavier waxless trail skis for snow machine tracked and formerly groomed areas. Skiing down was excellent, 1/2" corn/slush with minimal breakthough, depending on how late you get up there. Randonee skiers were having a good time. Best between 10-1pm, bring your sunscreen!

Perfect crust skiing! No wind, several dozen people out enjoying the great conditions. One bare spot at the junction.

What a difference a DAY makes...Its a winterwonderland with snow and wind @ 20 Kts gusting to 35. Makes for a great workout going up and a screaming ride going down! Crust is fine, sculpted to perfection by the wind and sun.

Don't delay, these conditions could be gone in a DAY! There's more water showing, more brush and vegetation appearing with each longer day of May!We'll be walking to get to these conditions soon!

Glen Alps crust is perfect right now. A bit windy this morning, but nice tailwind on the way back from the pass.

Nice conditions, bomber crust. Crust surface in the Powerline Pass Valley this year seems to be the smoothest in many years. Crust is still a tad slow (some morning sun would speed it up), but no complaints.

Powerline Pass - 4:00 PM, Mon May 05, 2008
complete coverage on powerline pass trail all the way up to the pass. started soft but got nice and crusty after the bridge (which is still buried) definitely glad I had full metal edge waxless skiis. whole valley floor open to explore! such great skiing in may, no crowds, and it should still be good for another week. awesome!
