Tony Knowles Coastal Trail

  [Anchorage] - 5:00 PM, Wed Mar 10, 2010

TK Coastal Trail not groomed. Windswept, a few berms, and snow 6-8 inches at points. Tough workout, but hey, very pretty with the sun still shining at 6 p.m. Chester Creek Trail groomed to intersection of TKCT.

  [Anchorage] - 3:00 PM, Wed Mar 10, 2010

Tracks freshly laid so just a touch punchy in wind blown areas. Still single track on most trails so it would apear that P&R have turned their backs on the traditional tracking for the park, and P&R has likewise refused to move on the Master Plan which called for more lighted trail (mostly north rjsp) and a second tunnel under DeBarr on the West side (and there's $750,000 to get started with.....)

I do want to remind one and all that with the last work done in the park, it makes more sense to start races from North half of the park at the soccer fields, which are connected to the south half by wonderful trail, AND has much more parking that is available at the chalet!

Tip o the hat to the skater skier who managed to cut up the tracks almost as soon as they were laid. Don't know whether it was that bozo or the diagonaler with the waxless skis, who is responsible, but the tracks were also punched up by several dogs. Have not seen buckets of shiny green fluid next to trail yet, but one never knows when some crazed vigilante will take things into her own hands....... I think it would be better to do things in a more civilized manner so I am wondering how many folk I can get to match an offer of $50 payable on the seizure of any dog by Animal Control and $100 for conviction of owner if claimant turns in the perp. It would only take 4 others to make that enough money to get someone to start setting live traps and by extension, to get Animal Control to do something about the situation for fear there would be a breach of the peace....... I have also heard some suggest that loose dogs get paintballed, but at least one member of APD suggested that marking a loose dog in such fashion might be unlawful.....

I am interested in hearing from anyone else with ideas on how to keep dogs (and people - lol) out of the tracks....

No grooming has been done in this area but it was pretty classic skiing and a good workout.

I think it is inappropriate to mention "buckets of shiny green fluid" in this forum even in a rant!

Prospect Heights trailhead

  [Anchorage] - 2:00 PM, Wed Mar 10, 2010

The trail is amazing and a lot of fun is to be had for anyone with metal edge backcountry tour skis. Such a pleasure to enjoy the trail with my dogs. Very nice conditions up in the state park.

In response the Russian Jack skier Marc. Clearly you have a lot of issues...professional help may be in order for your anger issues towards people, dogs, muni programs - expansion plans, and race organizers. Your insurance may provide this for Free....imagine the opportunity!

Hillside

  [Anchorage] - 6:00 PM, Tue Mar 09, 2010

Groomers are packing hillside. Still very soft with no classic tracks. I classic skied Besh and 2nd half Spencer, all packed but soft and slow. Plan for some great spring skiing!

Kincaid Park

  [Anchorage] - 4:00 PM, Tue Mar 09, 2010

Beautiful grooming at Kincaid and much of the Park is done - classic tracks are perfect ... and the skate lanes are SOFT - people skating are digging deep ruts. So take your Blue kick wax and go enjoy some great classic skiing. Windy in the stadium but everywhere else is fine. Multi use trail not yet groomed so if you want untracked - you can get that too.

Hillside

  [Anchorage] - 4:00 PM, Tue Mar 09, 2010

Soft soft soft at Hillside! Skied from Service to Hilltop, Bubble and the first half of Spencer. Fresh tracks on groomed but soft snow on Spencer - the trail looked more like the cat-ski track down in Winner Creek, there was that much fresh snow! With more packing down I'm sure this will turn into 10/10 conditions. Thanks again groomers for keeping up with Mother Nature.

Kincaid Park

  [Anchorage] - 2:00 PM, Mon Mar 08, 2010

Now that the cold weather has returned, we will resume our cleanup efforts this week at the old vehicle dump below the motocross track. But to get there, we have to drive on part of the Sisson Loop (350’ on the most northerly loop) which we will clear off. We will leave a lane for skiers but watch for equipment and trucks. We will also cross the coastal trail next to the blue foot bridge so take care when skiing there. Call with any questions – 267-2281 (AK Dept Fish & Game)

Tony Knowles Coastal Trail

  [Anchorage] - 1:00 PM, Mon Mar 08, 2010

We had a friend in town from Texas so we gave her the full AK blizzard experience. We skied from the sewer plant to the blue bridge and back on a very firm, post Tour trail with lots of windblown debris. Considerng how hard the wind was blowing from the north this section was pretty well protected.

Thanks NSAA for ordering up such a beautiful day on Sunday for the Tour. Today's weather made me appreciate skiing with over 1700 of my best friends in the Tour even more on such an awesome day.

Denali View Chalet trails

  [Mat-Su] - 10:00 AM, Mon Mar 08, 2010

Gusty winds and drifting snow will compromise the track from mile 15. Will set a new track 11 am Thursday, and will be setting trail markers. Tracks around DVC set. Will be re-setting track to parking lot again Friday, with some loops around DVC. Please note DVC only open for registered guests.

Arctic to Indian Traverse

  [Anchorage] - 10:00 AM, Mon Mar 08, 2010

I have spent a lot of time skiing down into Ship Creek Valley the past month helping set trail and explore. There is a LOT of snow down in the valley! Some friends skied A to I both days last weekend and conditions were good. Last Saturday we were breaking trail through at least 8" of powder. We set trail on the "main trail" as the river crossings aren't all that safe, or available, due to warm conditions this winter. We're hoping to ski Arctic to Bird Creek this coming weekend. If you're interested - let me know.

Peters Creek trail

  [Anchorage] - 10:00 AM, Mon Mar 08, 2010

We enjoyed fantastic powder ski conditions yesterday (March 7) with bright sunshine. We set new trail all the way back to where we normally ski on to the river, which is frozen up nicely and looked good for skiing on. The snow depth increased after we crossed 4 Mile Creek. The snowmachines haven't been back there for a while so it was nice and peaceful! We saw a couple of recent snow slides on the east side of the valley.

Arctic to Indian Traverse

  [Anchorage] - 10:00 AM, Mon Mar 08, 2010

BIRD CREEK (doesn't have it's own listing so I'm posting it here). On Saturday March 6 we skied up into the Bird Creek drainage with fairly warm temps (high 20s), powder snow, no wind and light fluffy snowflakes falling all day long. We broke trail all the way back to the ford site, about seven long miles in. We got there before the snowmachines and ATVs, which makes it nice! The trail to the ford site has been well cleared since last year and the trail is almost like a highway now. We only had to climb over/around a few downed trees; much better conditions than I have ever seen before. Kudos to the Rangers or whomever die the thorough job of trail clearing! The creek has lots of open water so we couldn't ski up it last last year.

Could someone please tell me where the Peters Creek trailhead is and what kind of skis you'd use on it? Thanks!
