Two $2,000 awards are available to one male skier and one female skier who are selected to the 2011 Alaska Junior Olympic Team.   In order to apply, athletes must be High School students in Alaska (click article title for more information).

MEMORIAL JUNIOR NATIONAL AWARD

2011

          Pia-Margrethe Denkewalter was a young Alaskan outdoor enthusiast and student. Pia enjoyed Nordic skiing, running, rock climbing and mountaineering, soccer, as well as travel, academia, reading and more. This award is meant to help a financially needy Alaskan cross-country skier who has qualified for the Alaskan Junior National Nordic Ski Team.

AWARD INFORMATION

·                    Two $2,000 awards will be offered for the year 2011

·                    The recipient must be an Alaskan, living in the state, attending an Alaskan high school or enrolled in home-schooling.

·                    The recipient must have a GPA of 2.75 or better

·                    The selection process will require an application, letter of recommendation, an essay describing the applicant and his or her scholastic and civic involvement. Special need, especially financial, may be included.

·                    The award winners will be announced in late February 2011 . Applications must be received by February 24, 2011.

JUNIOR NATIONAL AWARD 2011

This award is given to a high school cross-country skier who has:

1.                Qualified for the Alaskan Junior National Ski Team through participation in the Besh Cup qualifying races.

2.                Is in need of financial assistance to attend those Junior National Championship races.

3.                Has been selected for the Pia-Margrethe Denkewalter Award.

Any high school cross-country skier in the state of Alaska is eligible for the award.

SPORTSMANSHIP: Evidence of the applicant’s love of skiing, inter- and intramural camaraderie, assistance and helpfulness to his/her team and coaches, involvement in the skiing community outside of the team context, etc.

ACADEMICS: Examples of academic achievement as well as GPA, extracurricular academic activities, breadth of interest, any obstacles overcome, etc. will be factored into the selection.

FINANCIAL NEED: While this is not the only factor it will weigh heavily in the decision.
