AWG Trip payment:

Total Trip Cost is $835. From the total amount, $400 is payable by Check ONLY to “Team Alaska” (Arctic Winter Games) for transportation, lodging, and meals. $435 is the XC Skiing Sport Fee and covers uniform, jacket, wax, and coaches fee. Travel to Arctic Winter Games:

All Team Alaska Athletes – all sports, not just skiers – will be traveling together by motor coach to Whitehorse. There will be 5 buses departing from Anchorage and 4 buses departing from Fairbanks.

Departure is the evening of Friday, March 2^nd. We will drive through the night to get to the border between 8-10AM to check credentials/passports. Make sure to have your Passport! Travel across the boarder also requires a notarized Border crossing authorization form signed by your parent (this will be posted soon).

Saturday, March 10, after the awards banquet, all Team Alaska busses depart Whitehorse for home, either ANC or FAI

Uniforms:

Athletes must turn in their uniform order form during the AWG Team Alaska meeting following Besh Cup 6 in Fairbanks.

2012 Junior National Qualifying Information

Attached is the information for the 2012 Junior National Ski Team.

Information subject to change. Notices will be sent out if there is new information.

Making the Team:

If you are planning on making the JO team, JO Team announcements will be made during the Besh Cup Awards. The awards will start approximately 30 minutes after the last finisher in the Birch Hill Chalet in Fairbanks, directly after Besh Cup 6.

Skiers planning on attending the JO’s must confirm their acceptance and turn in their forms upon completion of the awards. Skiers making the 2012 JO Team and who will not be in Fairbanks may contact Joey Caterinichio joeycat@pobox.alaska.net or 229-6427 by February 3, 2012 and let me know if you are coming so that your spot is not given to an alternate. Pre-quals please let me know as soon as you can.

Payments and Deadlines:

Payments for athletes attending the JO’s must be received in full by February 13, 2012. You may mail payment in the form of a check…see forms for more info. Or pay by credit card through the CCAK website.

Flight Plans:

Currently there are no deviations from the flight plan. Team Alaska has already purchased 60 tickets.

Changing Flights: There are NO outbound changes to group tickets. ONLY returns. If you are planning on changing your trip for spring break, you may utilize your ticket but will incur a change fee. You may also use an alternative ticket. Your delta ticket will be in your name and you would have a credit to use for one year. You would be responsible for Delta rules, any change fees etc.

Welcome to the 2012 Junior National Ski team. You will be joining Team Alaska to participate in the Junior Olympics February 29-March 11, 2012. This should be a great trip.

Congratulations on your successful season! You have been selected to represent Alaska at the 2012 Junior National Championships in Soldier Hollow, Utah.

In the pdf packet (link above) there are several forms that need to be filled out and returned. Please fill out the forms that need to be turned in (Skier Information sheet, uniform size sheet) by Besh Cup 6.

Payment Due:

Payment is due in full by February 13, 2012. You may bring it to Fairbanks OR you may also pay/mail the entire amount by the deadline. Payment must be received in full by February 13. (Failure of payment may result the skiers spot on the team forfeited to an alternate). Payments may be made by check to CCAK (mailed) or Credit Card (CCAK website, additional fee to cover credit card commission applies to your total).

MEMORIAL JUNIOR NATIONAL AWARD

2012

Pia-Margrethe Denkewalter was a young Alaskan outdoor enthusiast and student. Pia enjoyed Nordic skiing, running, rock climbing and mountaineering, soccer, as well as travel, academia, reading and more. This award is meant to help a financially needy Alaskan cross-country skier who has qualified for the Alaskan Junior National Nordic Ski Team.

AWARD INFORMATION

· Two $2,000 awards will be offered for the year 2012

· The recipient must be an Alaskan, living in the state, attending an Alaskan high school or enrolled in home-schooling.

· The recipient must have a GPA of 2.75 or better

· The selection process will require an application, letter of recommendation, an essay describing the applicant and his or her scholastic and civic involvement. Special need, especially financial, may be included.

Schedule for the day: the J2/J3 skiers will start the day, next the J1 and older skiers will race, last to race will be the J4/J5/J6 skiers who will compete in an exciting downhill skicross competition on the hill above the stadium. These fun races involve speed, obstacles, and small jumps that will challenge and help our younger skiers develop their control skills. Kids, don’t miss out. Older folks, don’t miss the spectacle – and get your cameras ready.

Following the J4 and under Skicross, the Besh Cup Race Series award ceremony will take place in the Birch Hill Ski Building including the awarding of medals in each age group, presentation of the Besh Cup Trophies, and naming of the Junior National and Arctic Winter Games Teams. After the conclusion of the awards, JN and AWG Teams will have a short meeting with the Team Alaska coaches – note that committing to the trip, forms, and payment are due at this time. Food – as in years past, that there will be a snack bar with volunteers selling a variety of hot, hardy, and healthy food (and coffee) in the Birch Hill ski building – both Saturday and Sunday.

West Valley Ski Team Spaghetti Feed! Another great Fairbanks Besh Cup Tradition: The West Valley Ski Team will be holding a spaghetti dinner and silent auction fundraiser Saturday, February 4, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The menu will be spaghetti (meatless sauce will be available), garlic bread, salad, desserts, and drinks. Everyone welcome to both the dinner and/or the silent auction. Come talk about the races and load up on the carbs and perhaps take home some great door prizes! Price is $10 per person and $35 per family. Location: West Valley High School – 3800 Geist Road.

Online entry is now closed for Besh Cups 5 & 6. Race morning entry is available for $40 for J3 and older and $7 for J4 and younger. Day of Race entries are open until one hour prior to race start (i.e., they close promptly at 10am). Both races are scheduled to start at 11am. Saturdays’ race may be delayed do to cold temperatures in the morning and anticipated warming in the afternoon – see Besh Cup 5 & 6 info article for updated info. For Sundays races, the J4 and younger kids will not start until 1:15pm – so we plan to allow race morning entry for J4 and younger skiers until noon.

CCAK Coaches Clinic for Young Kids’ Coaches – Jan 27

To all Jr. Nordic Coaches and Others involved in coaching young skiers (3-10 yrs old):

Friday, January 27th, we will hold a make-up outdoor coaches clinic at Kincaid.

The clinic will be held on snow and is aimed at coaches involved with the youngest

skiers (3-10 yrs old).The clinic is one night only and will cover coaching of both skate and classic techniques.
Trond Flagstad, the former UAA Cross Country Ski Coach, will be teaching you the

basics of both classic and skate with particular emphasis on how to teach young

kids who are learning to ski.Time:                 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm
