Besh Cup Schedule for 2000-2001

How many Besh Cup races will be counted?  The CCAK Competition Committee voted in the spring of 1999 to use this table to determine how many races to count, in case the number of races held is less than the planned six races:
Best 4 of 6
Best 3 of 5
Best 2 of 4
Best 2 of 3
Best 2 of 2

If you are wondering whether you should attend the final weekend of racing, keep in mind that those two races will represent 2/3 of a skier's point total this year, compared to 1/2 of the total in a year when 6 races are held.  That means that there is much more potential for the final weekend of racing to have a major effect on the ranking order thank in other years.  It may be as important to "protect your position" as to improve your points.  Think twice before not attending the final  races.   It would be unfortunate to miss out on the JO team or AWG team simply because you did not attend the races.

Cross Country Alaska's  Besh Cup Race Series is the premier competition series in Alaska.  The series draws approximately 300 entries from all parts of the state to each of the six races in the series.  Results in Besh Cup races are used to select the Alaska Teams to the United States Ski and Snowboard Association Junior Olympic National Championships, as well as the biennial Arctic Winter Games (in even-numbered years, only -- next games in 2002).  In addition, Cross Country Alaska awards trophies to the series winners in each of the age-classes from Junior 3's through Masters.  You can download entry forms here.

The Besh Cup race schedule is developed by the Cross Country Alaska Competition Committee each year.   The dates, locations, distances, start formats and techniques are established by looking at the larger picture of skiing in Alaska and the nation and world.  The Competition Committee tries to establish a schedule which provides plenty of good competition, and which will be effective in selecting the best possible teams for JO's and AWG, while at the same time making sure that skiers in all the major ski regions of the state have the opportunity to compete in their home regions, and that clubs from the major ski regions have the opportunity to organize, and benefit from top-quality events.

In addition, the Competition Committee must take into consideration climatic realities, nationally recommended maximum competition distances, the distances of the championship events at Junior Olympics and Arctic Winter Games, the high school ski calendar, the national calendar (USSA National Championships and Junior World Championships Trials, in particular) and many other factors before generating each year's schedule.

Besh Cup entry fees are $15 per race for Cross Country Alaska members in age classes Junior 3 and up (born 1988 and earlier).  Cross Country Alaska members in age classes Junior 4 and younger receive free entry to all Besh Cup events.

Entry fees for non-CCAK members in age Classes Junior 3 and up are $30 per race.   Non-members in the J4-J5-J6 classes must pay $5 per race to enter the Besh Cup events.

To download the forms, you need to have Adobe Acrobat Reader.  This is a very useful program which is free -- you can download it over the web.  If you already have Acrobat Reader, or once you have finished downloading it, simply click on the appropriate link, and you should receive a copy of the membership form which you should be able to print out on any printer.  Be sure to mail in both the entry form and the waiver page; otherwise your race entry will not be processed!
