Salcha weather for Saturday, February 3, is available from several sources. Internet
weather is available at "www.weather.com" and you type in the Salcha zip code -
99714 - for access to our local forecast (weather is actually forecast for Eielson Air
Force Base, which is accurate for the Salcha School area). Another internet source is
"www.wunderground.com". Type Salcha, Alaska in the "Fast Forecast" box
at the top of the page. If you want to talk directly to a National Weather Service
forecaster in Fairbanks, call (907) 458-3700. There is a forecaster available 24
hours/day.
For those who are planning to ski the course before Saturday, it was set "best
line" classic last Sunday night. All intersections are marked. Maps are posted and
copies available for taking at the timing hut in the stadium. Please note that the
start/finish area has been revised to better accomodate dual starts. Have your skiers
familiarize themselves with the new setup. An extra set of tracks will be available on the
course - directly out the back doors of the gym - for kick wax testing. Please remind wax
testers that once the race starts it is their responsibility to watch out for racers and
not interfere with them. Also, there will be several extra sets of tracks on "step
turn hill" (the powerline area) for glide wax testing - there is no "run
out" area, so you will need to use speed traps.
SCHOOL IS IN SESSION ALL WEEK. The bathrooms are available for use during the week (up
front steps and inside to the left) but please come dressed to ski so as to minimize time
in them. NO EQUIPMENT IN THE BUILDING. ANY USE OF THE FACILITY OTHER THAN A QUICK TRIP TO
THE
BATHROOM REQUIRES PERMISSION FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE!
The school will be open at around 8:45 AM on race day. Glide waxing is permitted in the
gym - please do this on the tarps. The concession stand in the Ski Hut will be open for
business.
The temperature looks good for holding a race, but it will still be cold. Bring enough
clothes to dress accordingly. Heavier gloves, neck warmers and hats with ear flaps (or
swix ear muffs under a regular hat) would be a good idea.
Good racing! Jim Ostlind: 488-3987
